Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs from mouth to anus, along the alimentary canal, are the focus of this specialty. Physicians practicing in this field are called gastroenterologists. They have usually completed about eight years of premedical and medical education, a yearlong internship (this is not a part of the residency), three years of an internal medicine residency, and two to three years in the gastroenterology fellowship. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are common. There is increasing appreciation of the importance of the immune system in the pathogenesis of a number of these diseases. This book covers basic aspects of innate and adaptive immunity in the gastrointestinal tract, molecular mechanisms of acute and chronic inflammation. Anthony Gibson received his Ph.D at the University of Ukraine, and completed postdoctoral research training in the Department of Gastroenterology at the Bukovinan State Medical University, and in the Department of Biology and Medicine at Medical School, Ukraine. He was a Professor at Case Reserve University School of Medicine until 2006 when he joined the University of Ukraine, School of Medicine as Professor and Chair of the Department of Gastroenterolgy. Gastroenterolgy is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders and Hepatology is the branch of medicine that incorporates the study of liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas as well as management of their disorders. Anthony Gibson is an internationally recognized investigator who has made pioneering discoveries in the area of Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Immunology. Anthony Gibson has published more than 200 journal articles and reviews, and his trainees have presented over 200 meeting abstracts. He serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for numerous scientific journals.
